China’s State Media Responded to Trump’s Sarcastic Tweets

China has always been President-elect Donald J. Trump’s main target on Twitter. Although Twitter is officially blocked in mainland China, Trump seems to enjoy himself by criticizing China in his online posts. In a recent message, Trump wrote: “China has been taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U.S. in totally one-sided trade, but won’t help with North Korea. Nice.”

China’s state media responded with anger. On Tuesday, January 3rd, Xinhua, a major Chinese news site, posted a article titled: “An Obsession with ‘Twitter Foreign Policy’ is Undesirable,” which expressed disapproval of Trump’s comments and implied them to be “child’s play.” The relationship between America and China is getting intense, especially after the Taiwan issue, in which Trump spoke to Taiwan’s president; he was the first President or President-elect to directly contact Taiwan’s president.

Mass Prison Escape in Philippines

On Wednesday, January 4th, 158 inmates escaped the North Cotabato District Jail  in Kidapawan City of southern Philippines. At midnight, roughly 100 armed men assailed the compound, while the inmates fled the jail through the back portion. It was suspected by the prison officers that the breakaway MORO Islamic Liberation Front group was behind the attack; some of the escaped inmates had connections with the group. A manhunt was carried out immediately after the incident. As of January 7th, twenty-one inmates had been recaptured.
