Same-sex Marriage Recognized in Austria

On Tuesday, December 5, Austria officially recognized same-sex couples’ right to marriage, becoming the 16th country in Europe to grant marriage equality. The Austrian court said: “The differentiation between marriage and legally registered partnerships can no longer be upheld without discriminating against same-sex couples.” Earlier this winter, a Parliament vote in Germany also put into effect the legalization of same-sex marriages. Many are excited for these news.

Russia Banned from Winter Olympics

On Tuesday, December 5, the International Olympic Committee officially banned Russia from participating in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games; Russian athletes are allowed to compete as individuals. The Russian Doping Scandal first received attention during the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. Throughout the past years, in-depth investigations and newly discovered evidence have shown the systematic and state-backed nature of Russia’s doping program. The IOC’s decision was met with anger in Russia.

U.S. Recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital

During his speech in the White House, President Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital, a move that provoked nation-wide debates and international controversies. During his campaign in 2016, President Trump promised he would move the American Embassy; now, he intends to do so by re-establishing the Embassy in Jerusalem. In his speech, President Trump said: “I’ve judged this course of action to be in the best interest of the United States of America and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians. This is a long overdue step to advance the peace process. And to work towards a lasting agreement.”
