A new concert film is shining a well-deserved spotlight on the highest-grossing tour ever by a debut headlining rapper.
The new concert film “American YoungBoy,” released April 22, follows YoungBoy Never Broke Again, aka NBA YoungBoy, during his recent MASA “Make America Slime Again” tour, giving fans a look at his performances and an inside look into what happened behind the scenes.
YoungBoy has built one of the biggest fanbases in the rap industry. His music regularly pulls in millions of views. Songs like “Untouchable” and “Outside Today” are some of the top hits that helped him blow up. YoungBoy, originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, rose to fame at a young age and quickly became one of the most talked-about rappers in the industry.
His “MASA” tour being his first time on stage in five years and also being his first ever headlining tour built lots of hype around the country, with fans rushing to get tickets as the tour sold 552,215 tickets across 42 shows. According to Mojo Box Office, his tour ended up becoming the highest grossing tour ever by a debut headlining rapper, bringing in a massive $70,012,731 in total revenue. That momentum is what ultimately lead to the release of “American YoungBoy.”
Sophomore YoungBoy fan Khyren Jones likes that YoungBoy is himself and doesn’t pretend to play into what people want him to be.
“I like that he’s authentic and he says what’s on his mind no matter who may judge him or what they judge him for,” he said. “He has numerous flows and rhyme schemes that only the greats can have and his lyricism is underrated.”
Khyren appreciates that YoungBoy talks about the personal experiences he went through.
“I listen to YoungBoy every single day because he has numerous songs for different moods and emotions,” he explained. “He expresses himself through real things that people are going through. He talks about growing up and witnessing his mother struggle with addiction, struggling with addiction himself, having no father figure, growing up in poverty, becoming a teen dad, depression, wanting to escape poverty, wanting to be an example for his children, how he doubts his intellect and has low self-esteem because he dropped out of school, and so much more.”
Khyren hopes to see in-depth concert footage in the movie.
“I’m expecting to see a lots of behind the scenes footage from his MASA tour and more exclusive action of the process and decision making for the tour.”
Khyren wants to relive the feeling of what he experienced when he saw YoungBoy live in Boston.
“I would want to see it in person so I can live through the concert experience again,” he said. “Seeing other people who enjoy the same artist as me is a great feeling and a great way to enjoy his music to another level.”
Another fan, junior PJ Gasasu, enjoys how YoungBoy can please many different listeners.
“What I like most is his ability to be versatile,” he said. “He can go into many different flows, genres, and make them all sound good.”
PJ said he hopes to relive his experience from the Boston concert as well.
“In the YoungBoy film I am expecting to see the behind the scenes of his concerts,” he said. “Also, I am hoping to get the same feeling I got when I was at his actual concert.”
PJ says seeing the movie with fans who also listen to YoungBoy would make his experience better.
“I want to see it in theatres because it would be a better experience.” he said. “Also to see it with a bunch of other people who listen to YoungBoy would make the experience more enjoyable.”
With both fans hoping to relive the energy they felt at YoungBoy’s Boston concert American YoungBoy is becoming more than a film, giving fans another way to experience the feeling of YoungBoy himself.
