Legendary golfer Tiger Woods is in trouble again.
Woods, 50, was driving in Jupiter Island Fla., when he clipped a trailer resulting in his car to rollover. When authorities showed up, he claimed that he was looking at his phone trying to change the radio station. Woods passed a breathalyzer, but still showed signs of impairment- bloodshot eyes and sluggish movements. Tiger was later found in possession of hydrocodone pills, charged with a DUI, and released on bail.
December 30, 1975, Woods was born in Cypress, Calif. At just 21 in 1997, Woods won the Masters making history for being the youngest ever to do it and as the first golfer of Black and Asian heritage. In all, he has won 15 major championships and has 82 PGA Tour wins, all of which earned him around $121 million in his professional career, not including endorsements.
Woods has undergone 25 to 30 surgeries as a result of back and knee issues and a car crash in 2021. In 2017, Woods pled guilty to reckless driving, in addition, in 2009 he was cited for reckless driving. As a result of his recent arrest he is not allowed to drive Donald Trump’s Grandchildren. The Secret Service and along with the Trump family support the decision even prior to his last crash.
Woods marital and relationship issues have made headlines as well. He split with his ex-wife Elin Nordegren in 2010, with whom he shares two kids, Sam and Charlie Woods. Since, he has been linked with Lindsey Vonn, Erica Herman, and is allegedly dating Vanessa Trump.
Luke Green, former Boys Varsity Golf captain from Northampton Mass., thinks it’s important to recognize that celebrities also have things going on in their personal life.
“I think overall, Tiger Woods’ impact on making golf more popular and fun to watch is how I view his legacy, not his off the course issues,” Green said. “When you’re that talented at something and successful it’s easy for the public to gloss over the personal life issues.”
In the past, Woods has had many run-ins with the law. In 2026, he was arrested for a DUI. 2021, he was involved in a rollover crash. In 2017, he was also arrested for a DUI. 2018, he was named in a civil lawsuit of a wrongful death.
Sierra Grandonico, from Hatfield Mass., was shocked when she heard the news.
“It was surprising hearing that this was now his second time getting arrested for a DUI,” Sierra said. “I was also disappointed to hear that he is stepping away from golf for now because I enjoyed watching him since I’m a new golfer. It seems like he’s going through things in his personal life so I do hope that him taking time away will allow him to get the help he needs.”
Lila Parsons, a sophomore from Northampton Mass., enjoys watching golf and thinks that Woods needs to be more mindful of not only himself but others around him.
“Tiger is a very talented golfer, but he sometimes fails to recognize the risks that he puts others at,” she said. “He could’ve hit someone because he decided to drive under the influence. I also feel like if he really wanted to consume a substance before leaving, then he could have a driver pick him up or an Uber.”
In 2009, Woods became the first athlete to surpass the billion dollar milestone. He earned this money from competitions but also from endorsement deals, businesses, his brand Sun Day Red, appearances in tournaments or international events, and Play Impact Program (PIP)- rewards players that shine a positive spotlight on the sport.
