Twenty years later, the highly anticipated sequel, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” is finally out.
The film follows Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) as she navigates the decline of print media and faces losing her reputation and her magazine, Runway. Miranda needs to secure funds from her former assistant, Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), now a high-powered luxury executive, in order to keep her magazine relevant. When a corporate scandal causes the magazine’s stock to plummet, Miranda is forced to reconnect with her other former assistant, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), to help.
The movie, released May 1, stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. The original film’s screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, director, David Frankel, and producer, Wendy Finerman, are also returning to set.
Chloe Raker, a senior at Williston and a “Devil Wears Prada” fan, watched the trailer, and is only skeptical because of how much she loved the original.
“It definitely seems appealing, but I don’t know if they’ll be able to top how good the first one was,” she said.
Chloe said she was “addicted to” the first film.
“It was my favorite movie and was so iconic,” she said.
Maddie Taylor, a freshman at Williston, is “so excited to watch the movie!” Maddie has watched “The Devil Wears Prada” six times.
“I love everything about Anne Hathaway,” Maddie says. “I love how she dresses, her makeup, her movies, how she carries herself.”
“Also,” she adds, “I thought all the actors were so good.”
According to the New York Times and various social media platforms, there have already been several controversies regarding actors, character changes, and the questions about whether or not a sequel is even necessary.
Esther Zuckerman, who writes for the New York Times, interviewed individuals in New York (where the sequel was filming) who were worried that the anticipation for the movie set expectations too high.
Stephanie Sengwe at People magazine wrote an article titled, “Am I the Only One Worried the Starry Casting of ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Might Actually Ruin the Sequel?”
Sadie Dripps, a senior at Williston, interned at Vogue over the summer. “I think this movie is going to be amazing! I’m excited to see how they will continue the storyline from the beloved last movie.”
One of the biggest controversies is Sydney Sweeney’s role. It hasn’t been confirmed who she’s going to play, but according to People magazine, the directors haven’t wanted to give much away. Taylen Biggs, a child influencer, questioned Emily Blunt in a Nov. 14, 2025 interview.
“I can’t tease anything,” Blunt said. “Disney will come here, and literally blowdart me if I say anything,” she added jokingly.
However, on Instagram, people are speculating about Sweeney’s role. Three possibilities include her playing herself, a cameo, or Emily’s assistant. On TikTok, some users think the director never intended to give Sweeney a large role in the movie, but instead, cast her to create buzz and attract a younger audience.
Nonetheless, Sweeney’s appearance has definitely triggered online drama. Responding to a post on Instagram announcing that Sydney was spotted on the set of “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” there were very mixed reactions.
“No! Cut all of her scenes,” Kelsey Nycole said, “I want to watch and support this movie.” Another user wrote, “Yes, good for her!”
Maddie Taylor said, “I really like her as an actress, I’ve watched a lot of good movies with her in them,” but feels, “she’s not that good of a person, in my opinion.”
Popular movies and shows Sydney Sweeney has starred in include “Euphoria,” which debuted in 2019, “Anyone But You” (2023), “The Housemaid” (2025), and the 2021 first season of “The White Lotus.”
Sweeney drew negative attention from her July 2025 American Eagle jeans ad. Specifically, her line, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring … My jeans are blue.”
Then, in the ad, a voice-over states, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
The New York Times, in an article published Sept. 5, 2025, reported that American Eagle sales fell after the ad, which faced heavy backlash, with some media, like The Guardian calling it “tone-deaf.”
The ad, which equated “great jeans” with “great genes,” as in Sweeney’s blonde hair, blue eyes, and white skin genetics, “seemingly championed eugenics and white beauty standards,” wrote Hanna Zeigler in The New York Times.
Tamantha Ryan, who writes for Page Six, said that “TikTok users called out the ad for being Nazi Propaganda.”
President Donald Trump posted about Sydney Sweeney’s ad on his social media account, Truth Social, calling the campaign “the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there,” while praising her for being a registered Republican.
In an article published April 8, Vanessa Serna, who writes for Page Six, explains that Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney weren’t featured in photos together at “Euphoria’s” season 3 premiere. According to the article, some people speculate it’s because of their opposing political views.
“‘Euphoria’s’ bosses are all too aware the pair do not get along. There were tensions way back … Their paths barely crossed during the making of season 3,” an insider from The Sun said.
[Update: Sweeney was cut from the movie.]
One actor who won’t be returning to the set of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” is Adrian Grenier, who played Andy’s boyfriend in the first movie.
He told Page Six in an exclusive interview on March 13 that, “it was a disappointment that I didn’t get the call to be in the sequel, but I also understand there’s some backlash with Nate, the character,” he says, “But I think that just leaves room for a spinoff.”
Harper’s Bazaar, a monthly American fashion magazine, explained that in the first “Devil Wears Prada,” fans “condemned Nate as a selfish person uninterested in supporting the evolving career of his girlfriend,” (Andy Sachs).
On the other hand, Rachel Swartz, a freshman at Williston, feels, “It’s a bit sad and confusing. I thought Nate did a pretty good job in the movie.”
Along with the new film come new fashion trends. Sadie thinks, “In ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ specifically, the fashion trends definitely target women in their 20s and 30s.”
The magazine Real Simple claims the movie “Is Packed With New Trends.” Some of the most popular include “Navy Power Suits, All White, Pleated Skirts, and Pinstripe Co-Ord,” which is a matching two-piece outfit usually featuring a waistcoat and skirt.
Hathaway has been featured wearing many of these outfits.
In Who What Wear Magazine, Sierra Mayhew wrote that the movie is “Already Bringing Throwback Trends to the Spotlight.” According to the article, some old fashion trends that could be coming back are neckties, as both Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt have been spotted wearing them, vintage briefcases, nostalgic shoes, specifically textured shoes with designs or leather, and oversized sunglasses.
“Lace is definitely a trend I think we have already seen in 2026, and will continue to see,” Sadie added. “As for patterns, many people predicted a new print would emerge as the new leading trend.”
Sadie also explains that more “vintage” looks have been portrayed in 2026, and believes, “they will seamlessly fit in with current trends.”
