Craving some burritos and tacos? Well, lucky for you, two popular Mexican restaurants are coming to town, and they’ll both be within campus boundaries.

Mission Cantina, located in Amherst, Mass., and La Veracruzana, located in Amherst and Northampton, will both bring the aroma and spicy flavors of traditional Mexican cuisine to Easthampton soon.

Mission Cantina is going to be located on Cottage Street in the same building as the old Mexican Restaurant, La Casita Azteca.

Mission Cantina has been in Amherst since 2011, serving traditional Mexican delicacies like, tacos, burritos, and enchiladas. Their official website assures the “freshest products” and a pleasant experience.

Kristen Miklinezich, a Mission Cantina staff member, was hopeful the restaurant will be open by the end of summer, even though a date has not yet been fixed. She is excited about Easthampton, which she called a good walking town.

Anna Richardson ’21, a Granby resident, believes no one can beat the Mexican dishes made at Mission Cantina.

“It’s really good,” she said. “It’s definitely one of the best Mexican places in the [Pioneer] Valley. And I wish I could go there more, but the wait is always really long on weekends.”

Nathan Shatz ’21, from Northampton, likes Mission Cantina’s casual atmosphere.

“It’s a pretty nice place,” he said, “but it’s not very fancy so you can get good food for decent prices and you don’t have to dress up,” he said.

Abby Shulkind ’21, who lives in Amherst, would recommend Mission Cantina to others; she especially likes the chicken enchiladas.

Easthampton’s other new spot, La Veracruzana, is looking to open the first or second week of May. The restaurant will be located on 31 Union Street, diagonally across the street from Small Oven, where the old comic bookstore was located.

The Willistonian spoke to La Veracruzana’s owner, Sunia Hood. She is enthusiastic that the new restaurant is in Easthampton because       “[it] is an up-and-coming city.”

Hood said her restaurant is considering allowing students to pay with their Sammy card.

Students at Williston can’t wait to try La Veracruzana, from its traditional Mexican fare to more unusual items like cactus tacos, beef tongue, and red snapper.

Sarah Markey ’22, from Florence, Mass., has been to La Veracruzana and looks forward to dining at Mission Cantina very soon.

“Veracruzana is one of my all time favorite restaurants, I would highly recommend it,” Sarah said.

Sarah has never been to Mission Cantina, but she’s “heard really great things about it. I can’t wait to go when it comes to Easthampton.”

Gabriel Davila Bustamante, another sophomore from Amherst, suggests La Veracruzana’s pupusas, a thick cornmeal flatbread stuffed with beans and cheese.

Sally Alrutz, a senior from Springfield, had been to La Veracruzana once with her family for dinner. Though she’s graduating in May, she’s excited the popular restaurant is moving close to campus.
