College football teams held their spring games, giving fans an early look at how their teams might play in the upcoming season.
Saturday’s April 11, 18, and 25, many big time FBS schools, including Indiana, Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Colorado had their spring games.
Spring football games have been a tradition in college football for many years. They take place at the end of spring practices, which are usually a month long. During spring practices, players train, learn plays, and compete for starting spots in the upcoming season.
FBS stands for Football Bowl Subdivision, and represents the 138 highest-ranking Division 1 programs.
In a spring game, the team is usually split into two groups that play against each other. The score doesn’t really matter, because the main goal is to help players improve and give coaches a chance to evaluate everyone. Coaches give younger or backup players more playing time but still put the starters into compete against each other.
In the Alabama A game, quarterbacks Keelon Russell and Ausin Mack were competing for reps, but Russell was seen more during the game due to Mack being limited to what he could do because of an injury from the season. Mack competed with limited reps going six for 12 in completed passes.
Ohio State recently just had their game April 18. Both offense and defense looked well rounded. A big standout for the offensive side of the ball was five-star freshman wide receiver Chris Henry Jr, and B1G 10 receiver of the year Jermiah Smith.
Defensively, for the Buckeyes, the lineman were pressuring the QBs all day, and as a result, fans have high hopes for the defense this year. Most of Ohio State’s defense entered the 2026 NFL draft.
Monmouth commit Lucas Guay recently went to Monmouth’s spring game and loved what he saw.
“It was cool to see the guys putting out everything they have worked for at the game,” Lucas said.
Sophomore Stephen Antonucci, University of Rhode Island offensive lineman, played in his spring game on April 25 and thinks it was a great opportunity to show what he can do.
” I played left guard for all of my reps and I think I performed very well,” Antonucci said. “It showed the coaches what I can do but also what I need to work on for the upcoming season.”
