Jose Fernandez a 24-year-old pitcher for the Miami Marlins, was killed in a boating accident on Sunday, September 25. The accident occurred at 3:30 in the morning when his boat hit a jetty going full speed.

Including Fernande, there were two other passengers and they also died.

Fernandez won the Rookie of the Year in the 2013 season and was the ace pitcher for his team. He was often compared to legendary pitcher Pedro Martinez.

Fernandez came to the U.S. from Cuba when he was 15; he tried three times to come over, and only made it successfully on his final attempt.

The whole sports community is mourning the loss of Fernandez. The Marlins cancelled their game the night he died against the Mets.

On the following day the whole Marlins team wore his jersey, number 16, during the game.

Mr. Sawyer, the Varsity Baseball coach, said it is always sad, “when someone so young dies tragically.”

Sawyer said it’s “touching the way the baseball community” came together in support after Fernandez’s tragic death.
