Popular and controversial podcast host Alex Cooper is now expanding her content in new and inventive ways.

Offering essential advice for teen girls, and with more than five million listeners, “Call Her Daddy” (CHD), is one of the most popular podcasts of the Gen Z era. Cooper claimed the title of world’s #1 female podcaster by discussing relationship advice and responding to “The Daddy Gang’s” questions. Cooper has also brought on guests such as “it-girl” influencer Alix Earle and multi-award-winning performer John Legend.

The first episode of “Call Her Daddy” aired Oct. 3, 2018. After the first season, it was acquired by Barstool Sports, a media empire whose main audience at the time was mostly Gen Z males. “Call Her Daddy” brought a new audience to Barstool, while Barstool helped popularize CHD.

In 2021 and 2022, “Call Her Daddy” was ranked the second most popular podcast on Spotify, according to Variety.

The early episodes of “CHD” talked mostly about sex and relationships. These topics were seen as controversial to some, but inevitably gave the show an edge in the podcasting world. Now, “CHD” has over 250 episodes, and continues to air every week.

Junior Elle Ash, an avid listener, appreciates “Call Her Daddy” because, “Alex Cooper acts as a mom to all her listeners and she talks about topics that people might not always be able to learn about or talk about with others, and she’s very comforting and funny.”

Elle acknowledges that Cooper was the first person to make a podcast with content discussing such personal topics like all types of relationship advice and in general what it’s like being a girl going through young adulthood.

“Nobody else was touching on those topics,” Elle said. “She was the first person to, and she did it the best.”

Although “Call Her Daddy” has always been dominant in the podcast world, the show hit a significant rough patch in 2020 when the two original hosts parted ways and the tone of the podcast shifted.

While “CHD” was a part of Barstool Sports, Cooper and former co-host Sofia Franklyn, who were best friends and roommates at the time, got into controversy over whether or not Franklyn was loyal to Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, or if she was making other private deals.

This divided the two hosts, and when Cooper decided to stay with Barstool, Franklyn took off and started her own podcast. Cooper stayed with Barstool Sports until 2021 when she signed a $60 million contract with Spotify, which is now CHD’s only producer.

In the most recent seasons, Cooper has taken a new approach to podcasting by interviewing the most famous and controversial people, as well as giving them a chance to share their stories through a completely unfiltered, judgement-free lens.

Hayden Hedstrom has listened to “CHD” for the past couple of years and applauds Cooper for switching up her normal content.

“I love that Alex Cooper has, over time, expanded from just giving advice, to interviewing all different types of celebrities,” she said. “My favorite that comes to mind is the one with Holly Madison, who was one of Hugh Hefner’s main girlfriends in the Playboy mansion. I think the fact that “CHD” can be used as a platform to let women be empowering by telling their stories and sharing past things that they have gone through is something unique, and I love listening.”

A recent episode featured Alix Earle, one of the most popular influencers on social media right now. As a fan of both Cooper and Earle, junior Gus Brown was so happy to see their collaboration and watch them support each other as two women in this industry.

“I think everything they talked about was really good big sister advice, and I felt like I got to know Alix Earle more from her time on ‘Call Her Daddy,'” Gus said. “They are two people I really look up to because they are both independent, powerful women who have fought their way through the industry to be on top and to be taken seriously, while also keeping things very real. This was the collab we needed.”

Cooper told Variety she does not shy away from new opportunities to keep her content relevant.

“What I’ve learned from doing this job, is that you have to constantly innovate, and you have to not press against what is coming. Embrace it, be apart of it,” she said.
