There is one senior on campus who everybody loves.
Sarat (Est) Sukcharoenyingyong, a senior from Bangkok, is currently in his third year at Williston, and is widely known on campus as a friendly, quiet guy who is always there to have a nice conversation. He is known across all grades as a hard-working student and a laid back friend.
Est has left a positive mark on everyone he meets, and from that point on, they feel inclined to support him in every way. One of Est’s favorite Williston memories is “when [he] won [his] first ever tennis game and saw Vasu [Jain ’22] on the sidelines hyping [him] up.”
In his junior year, Est was roommates with Weston Reardon ’24 in John Wright, where he is now a proctor. This connection sparked after the two became close friends the year prior.
“Est was a great roommate,” Weston said. “He was really clean, just like me, so we had no problem keeping our room clean. Some roommates don’t always get along but there was never a point where I was unhappy being his roommate.”
Weston and Est’s friendship has lasted since sophomore year and strengthened throughout the years. For the past two years, they have spent time together not only at school but during long breaks.
“My favorite memories over the years have been when Est comes to my house for Thanksgiving break [in Long Island, N.Y.] and meets all my friends,” he said. “They included him in everything we did and everyone thought he was really cool.”
Logan Cherewatti ’24 has known Est since sophomore year through their connections in Latin and soccer. Logan recognizes that Est is a special individual everyone is lucky to know.
“If I am being honest with myself there is no way to describe Est. I am never going to meet another guy like him again, and that is what makes him so great,” he said. “The guy is a weapon in the Latin classroom, a freak athlete on the soccer pitch, and an icon across campus.”
At the moment, Est is taking AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science, Honors Biology, Honors Latin III, and English.
Beatrice Cody is Est’s Latin teacher and appreciates the diligence he brings to class.
“He has a natural affinity for language learning and grasps new concepts very quickly,” Cody said. “His Latin vocabulary is huge and he is a very competent translator. In class Est listens with laser focus.”
“He isn’t a person who calls attention to himself,” she added. “He is very happy to participate when called upon … he hears and understands everything that’s going on, and he will have a thoughtful, accurate answer if you ask him a question.”
Through the years, Cody has recognized Est as one of the more caring and thoughtful students she has.
“Truly, Est is one of those incredibly consistent, solid, reliable people, who are always thoughtful, respectful, considerate, attentive to the task at hand, and always trying their best,” she said.
Through his participation in robotics and high level STEM classes, Est hopes for a successful career in those areas when he is older.
“I would like to work in a tech company,” he said. “I want to work in the U.S. for several years and then maybe move to Singapore when I’m older.”
In his time at Williston, Est has developed a place in everyone’s hearts. Although he says he is “a quieter kid most of the time,” he doesn’t mind the attention he gets.
“I like everyone to know me,” he said. “It’s good to have a variety of friends and connections.”
