Williston captains hoist the Miller Cup after a great win over The Gunnery.

Its tradition stemming from 1985, the Ogden D. Miller Cup is a trophy that is awarded annually to the winner of the football game between Williston and The Gunnery. This school year marks the 30th anniversary of the rivalry game between these two schools.

This cup honors Ogden Miller, a Williston graduate of the Class of 1926 and a former trustee for the school. In 1945, Ogden became the headmaster at The Gunnery where he served for twenty-four years.

In 1985, three faculty members of both Williston and The Gunnery decided to create a rivalry game in honor of Mr. Miller, who impacted both of the schools. Thus, the Ogden D. Miller cup was born.

When asked about the one Miller Cup game that sticks out in his mind, Coach Mark Conroy said it goes back to 2007.

Williston suffered a 28-14 loss while playing in one of the most historic games of the school’s long history. “It was 2007, the first game held on the turf field where there was about 8 inches of rain in Easthampton, I can remember it like it was yesterday,” Coach Conroy said.

The present season’s 54-27 win on October 4th marks the sixth year in a row that Williston has won the Miller Cup, keeping it in the hands of the Wildcats for over half a decade.

Stephen Goldsmith ‘15 who has been around the Miller Cup for the past three years, talks about the tradition that comes with it, saying, “it’s a great feeling to have had this cup in the school’s possession for each and every season I’ve been here.” He added, “I really feel great coming out my last year at Williston having won it.”

This year’s game took place on October 4th on a damp Saturday night.

The Highlanders started out on a drive by, stopped by Williston’s entire defense on their own end of the field.

The Wildcats took advantage of the chance to disappoint the crowd by rushing for two touchdowns on their first two offensive plays.

There was no looking back from there on. The Williston offense had an explosive day, posting a final score of 54-27.

The entire game was a hard fought battle that consisted of big plays from both teams involved.

The Gunnery crowd was filled with excitement and chaos as the game marked the first game to be played on their own turf this year.

After years of playing this game in the mud on The Gunnery’s campus, it would now be played on the turf.

Soon after the game ended, the annual ceremony began to honor this year’s winner. Peter Becker, the head of school at The Gunnery, came onto the field to congratulate Williston on the win and explain the story of Ogden Miller. Becker explained the reason behind this treasured trophy and what Ogden meant to both schools.

The ceremony ended with the handing over of the Miller Cup to Williston and a quick celebration as the boys cheered in triumph over a great victory for the Wildcats.

As history was shown through the Ogden Miller Cup, more history was made surrounding it.

With each Wildcat win, pride is shown through the hoisting of this silver cup.
