Despite a tough start, the Williston Varsity Girls Field Hockey team is hoping for another successful season.

Field Hockey competes in the New England Prep League, hich consists of Berkshire, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Suffield, Taft, and Westminster,  are of which are tough opponents. The Wildcats have been extremely dominant in years past, winning the league title every year since 2010, according to Williston’s official website.

With the fall season underway, the team is looking forward to another very strong year.

The Willistonian spoke with senior captains Maura Holden and Kate Holmes, both of whom feel optimistic about their chances on the turf.

“We’re very young, we have a lot of freshman that are really good,” Maura said.

Although the team’s record is 3-5-0, including big wins over Millbrook, Miss Porter’s and Berkshire, their games have all been competitive and against class A teams. Williston is in the Class B league.

“Our record does not depict where we are at right now,” Maura said.

“We should have another solid season ahead,” added Kate.

The girls most recently won the New England Championship in 2015. Both captains said it was because they had a very strong group of seniors then who were extremely athletic. Another reason Maura and Kate are looking forward to a strong season is because almost all of the girls play ice hockey.

“The sports aren’t really alike,” said Maura, “but since most of us play hockey, it is easier to pick up because we’re use to the stick and we already know how to run.”

The Willistonian also spoke with head coach Mrs. Garrity, who thinks the team is heading in the right direction.

“We had a streak of Class A games and now we are going to have a streak of class B games,” Garrity said. “We look very strong heading into the class B games.”

The team has a big game on Wednesday, October 17 versus Taft and on Saturday, October 20 against Pomfret.

“One of the reasons that our team is consistently good is because we always have a very competitive group of girls,” Garrity said. “They work hard and that’s the Williston way.”
