Williston Teacher: Ms. Klumpp

This school year Williston offered a new scholars history course taught by Mrs. Klumpp. In this course, students learn about all types of history, ranging from Native American sports to the Elizabethan period.

In this project based course, students first have to choose a topic to research, then, throughout the trimester, they write a paper based on the research that they have done on their topic. Some topics students are researching in this trimester are concussions in football, Irish terrorism, and the national parks.

This Scholars class used to be taught by both Mrs. Klumpp and Ms. Sawyer and was a combination of English and History mainly focusing on Elizabethan England. But this year Mrs. Klumpp has the class to herself and teaches only about history.

“Oh my G-D I love history,” she says.

As to why she decided to become a history teacher, Mrs. Klumpp explains, “I had an amazing history teacher in high school who made me fall in love with the subject.”

Mrs. Klumpp said that she hopes to do the same for the nine students that she now has in her class.

Although she would love for the number to grow to twelve, she says, “I definitely do not want fewer [students]!” But, she does not want any students who are just going to take the class just to say they took a scholars course.

She notes, “I want students who like history and are not going to dread the work to take the course because they are going to have to write 20 pages on their topic. So I want them to enjoy it!”

When she was asked what is her favorite topic to teach, her answer was “Elizabethan England, Modern European studies, and World War I.”

Mrs. Klumpp is very enthusiastic about teaching the Williston Scholars History Course and she looks forward to many more years of success. It is a new class, so she is still learning how to make the class better. She will make some tweaks to improve the class for future trimesters, she looks forward to be teaching this again next trimester.
