The Perils of Driving to School in the Snow

Some relish the beauty and activities a large snowfall brings, while others are frustrated with the inconveniences it poses on daily life.

There can be two very different types of people on campus: some who will run out and enjoy the snow coating the ground. And then there are those who despise how slippery the ground becomes and how hard day-to-day life gets.

Throughout the winter months, Williston students are used to snowfall; the area gets an average of 9” in December, according to AccuWeather. That changed this year; we had less than an inch of snowfall in December. This was amazing news to some students on campus, while some were shocked by the lack of snow.

Zach Pincus, a boarding student from Rowley, Mass, finds the first snowfall “exciting” and even thought he has grown up around snow there is always something “special” about it.

“I love the snow. Whenever I start to see snowfall, I get so excited,” he said.

That is not the same for everyone on campus, especially those who have to brave the roads to get here. Brooke Manfredi, a senior day student from Westfield, Mass, thinks the snowfall makes her life throughout the winter “brutal.”

“My 30-minute drive to school turns into a 45-minute drive with constant slipping if I take a turn too hard,” said Brooke.

Liam Barry, a junior from Worthington, Mass., agrees with Brooke.

“It’s so dangerous; my normal 45 min drive is full of drifts and slips,” said Liam.

Many day students would be pleased with an unspoken rule that day students could be a couple minutes late to classes if they must take longer due to snow. Liam agreed it would be nice to have a little more time so he would not have to stress about his drive.

While some day student drivers struggle with the snow, it can also impact boarders. Ronan McGurn, a senior from Westfield, N.J., struggles with the day-to-day journey with the snow.

“Having to walk through the snow and ice can be really annoying,” said Ronan.
