The Month of May

MAY the last month before Summer be a great one

May is the home stretch, the last month before summer for all Williston students. May is a month packed with a variety of different activities and events.

Mr. Spearing, Williston’s Director of Student Activities, says, “It’s going to be a great end of 2014-15 and I’m looking forward to some impressive turnouts at the upcoming events.”  Here are some things to put on your calendar that are coming up very soon.

Starting the month off on May 1st, Williston will be hosting Grandparents Day which should be a fun time to show Grandparents around the campus and even learn a thing or two. Along with this will be the class representative elections for the freshman, sophomore and junior classes, so also be sure to cast your vote somewhere between giving Grandparents the grand tour.

AP Exams will be taking place from May 4th – 15th so good luck to those that are taking them – remember to study hard and get a good night’s rest the night before.

Advisee Dinners will happen on May 5th. These will be the last of the year, so make it a good one and enjoy some great food. Olivia Cuevas ’16, says, “I love advisee dinners because the food is my advisors treat and I enjoy being around the people in my advisory.”

May 9th will be the student talent show which should be very entertaining, so everyone should come on out and see their peers shine on stage. Bring some friends along and come cheer them on. Good luck to all who choose to participate, break a leg! Mr. Spearing notes, “I love the events that students bring their friends out to have some fun. The more the merrier.”

May 15th will be the Senior Class Dinner. Annika Smith ’15, says, “I have been looking forward to Senior Dinner because it is a time to be social with my class but ceremonial at the same time.”

Saturday May 16th will be the last day of spring sports. Mr. Conroy, Director of Athletics, says, “We are hosting the NEPSAC Division II Track and Field Championships. We have hosted this event every other year for many years now primarily because we have a first rate facility and a community that does a great job of hosting these sorts of events.”

Mr. Conroy continues, “The fact that we have some terrific track and field athletes, including senior MVP Gabby Thomas, who have had great success in this event only makes it that much more exciting for Williston.”

According to Mr. Conroy there are significantly fewer NEPSAC tournaments in the spring specifically because of the schools’ staggered graduations being held.

Sunday, May 17th will be the Senior Prom. Everyone will be dressed to impress and be out on the quad before heading out to party it up at the Log Cabin. Mary McCarthy ’15, says, “I am excited to spend an amazing night with my friends looking dapper.”

After the end of the sports season, the prom and senior lock-in all contribute to a packed weekend of events the seniors get the day off with their traditional senior day being held on Monday May 18th.

One of the most popular events in May is Willy Gras. According to Mr. Spearing, “Willy Gras is a Spring Festival in the afternoon of a May class day every year. It’s a chance to relax, blow off some steam, and enjoy the late spring weather as we prepare for Commencement and assessments.” The event will take place on May 20th.

Be sure to dress appropriately, come have some fun and get some food and have a great time out on the quad with the entire community. Mr. Spearing notes, “Music and food are great ways to get people excited to be together.”

On May 22nd Williston will give out its Athletic Awards for the spring season. Mr. Conroy says, “The teams that have the best opportunity to finish with top seasons are: Girls Track and Field will be a contender for top team honors at the NEPSAC championships, both lacrosse teams have a chance to finish with outstanding seasons, baseball is right in the hunt for a league playoff spot, our golf teams are young but have some great talent and I expect that they will do well in their season end golf championship. Girls Water Polo is in first place in NEPSAC so has a chance to have a very special season!”

Following the Athletic Awards Assembly will be Baccalaureate and the Academic Awards Assembly held on May 23rd.

On May 24th, Commencement will be held. This is Williston’s moving up ceremony, as we say goodbye to the class of 2015 and wish them well on their new journeys and acknowledge the step up of the other classes.

The last week of school will include assessments for the freshman, sophomore and junior classes as the seniors depart. Make sure to study up and really push through the last week because on May 28th after the last few exams in the morning, you will be free to go for the summer.

So let’s make this last month count and continue to show our purpose, display our passion, and uphold our integrity as we head into the final weeks of school, MAY this be a month to do good well.
