A sensational album is set to drop early this year. At least, that’s the rumor.

Rapper Playboi Carti has announced he will be releasing his new album “I AM MUSIC” sometime in 2024, three years after his last album, “A Whole Lotta Red.” During the three years, he has delayed and scrapped his albums multiple times, causing many fans to turn their backs on him. However,  some believe he is delaying his albums on purpose.

Playboi Carti is an American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia, notorious for rage and trap music. Carti, whose real name is Jordan Terrel Carter, has been releasing music since 2011, with his debut mixtape “Playboi Carti” reaching top 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017. His second album “A Whole Lotta Red,” released in 2020, was the number one album on the U.S. Billboard 200. He has released singles and features, like “Junya” on Kanye West’s ‘Donda” and received high praise from the public.

However, since 2020, Carti, 27, has not released a new album or major project, and most upcoming projects that were set to release have been delayed and scrapped. On March 3, 2023, he played an unreleased song ” Rockstar,” during the Rolling Loud California, but there’s been no news since.

On June 12, Carti teased an upcoming album with Youngboy Never Broke Again named “004KT,” which was scrapped as well. On December 7, 2023, on his social media account, Carti posted ” I AM MUSIC,” which is speculated to be the name for his upcoming album which, again, was set to drop on new year’s day but was delayed to early this year.

Many fans, including fellow rapper Denzel Curry, have shown frustration regarding the delays. Curry posted that Carti is “pump faking” and should “drop the damn album.” Regardless, many on campus are excited about the album.

David Anh, a junior who is an avid fan of the artist, is thrilled about the upcoming album.

“I’ve already heard some leaks from others and seen previews on Carti’s Instagram,” said David. “I can’t wait to hear the full album. I’ve been waiting for over a year to hear his new music and flow.”

In addition, he thinks that the delay to early 2024 will help better the music, but it should not be delayed any further.

“I believe that delaying the release of the album will lead to a better outcome,” he said. “I heard that Carti finished his album last year and worked in Paris to enhance it. I’m hoping that Carti will drop his new album by the end of this month because I’m sure he is ready to release it.”

Richard Kimball, a freshman and a big fan of Carti’s music, thinks that the album will turn out great, despite the delays he’s been making.

“I mean, although I’m kind of mad about [the delays], there isn’t enough you can do about it,” he said. “I mean, it’s Carti, he can do whatever he wants about his album, and it usually turns out really good. His last album was a really big sensation, so I believe the new album is going to be good as well.”

He believes that the new albums will have a huge impact on not just the music scene, but larger society as well.

“[The album] better be good, especially since he’s been delaying it for so long,” he said. “It’ll have society-altering levels of impact, set new trends, bring new fashion … and honestly as a fan, I expect nothing less from him. ‘A Whole Lotta Red’ had a generational impact, and the new album will be even greater.”
