Williston Girls varsity Hockey team in the annual pink in the rink game

On Saturday, February 13th, in  Lossone Hockey rink, the girls Varsity Hockey team hosted their annual Pink In The Rink Game against Kimball Union Academy. The Williston Wildcats defeated the KUA Wildcats 6-0.

One of Williston’s  Breast Cancer Awareness games this winter season attracted a large fan section that kept the Williston Wildcats roaring until the sound of the final buzzer. Despite the frosty conditions, Williston’s spirit club  attracted students and parents by setting up a bake sale and t-shirt sale to help raise money for the cause. Students and parents showed up in Pink long sleeve shirts, pink long pants, and to top the look off pink hats. Another attraction to the game was the hockey themed raffle.

The game started off  fast with immediate pressure for the Williston girls. It continued to go in Williston’s favor as the game progressed. Although Williston had the puck for much of the first period, none of the shots were going in the net for the Williston Wildcats. When the second period began Williston started flying, scoring four goals in fifteen minutes and two goals in the third period to finish off the KUA Wildcats.

A current senior on the Girls Varsity Hockey team, Meg Rickard 16′ ,notes, “Playing in a game like this was really fun for me because we didn’t treat it like a normal game. As a team, we didn’t treat this as a regular game because we knew that we were fighting for a cause that has had a negative impact on our society.”

Rickard continues, “It was really fun playing in a game where we raised awareness for breast cancer and I am really privileged to be able to play in a game of this magnitude.”

Delaney Belinskas 16′ states, “Playing in games like this for all four years I have been at Williston was truly an amazing experience because playing for such a great cause like this is something I have dreamt of since I was kid. I really like moments like this because the whole community comes out too support . Best of all, everyone is wearing pink. Out of all the hockey games I have played in, this one definitely stands out the most.”

This girls came away with yet another win, as they extended their winning run to sixteen.

Rachel Rockwell 16′ notes , “Playing in games like this means so much to me. Not many people have a chance out there to incorporate the sport they love with a cause that means so much to them. Playing in a game of such as this and winning at the same time is priceless.’

Rockwell continues, “Its moments like these where people get the realization that there are other events in the world that are bigger than sports. Games like these help me realize that there are other things going on apart from sports.”

The team went on to win against Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH) on Wednesday February 17th , 8-0.
