Jewelry’s Personal Impact for Students on Campus

A recent undertone analysis filter on TikTok has gotten students thinking about what color jewelery they should wear.

On campus it seems this year that there are two types of people; those who wear silver jewelry and those who wear gold jewelry.  If you use this filter on TikTok and your face turns yellow, you’re a gold person. If it turns pink, you’re a silver person.

Wearing gold jewelry is seen as elegant and charming. With three different shades–yellow, white and rose gold–it gives a shiny metallic look that many people desire. Although it is more common for Williston students to wear fake gold earrings, necklaces and bracelets, gold also does not tarnish as easily as silver.

Silver jewelry gives off a balanced and harmonious look that radiates professionalism. Warm undertones and colors like brown, copper, bronze and red go best with gold jewelry. Silver is flattering, with cool undertones and looks best in blue, lilac, and grey. Regardless, adding jewelry takes your outfits to the next level.

Naomi Simpson, a senior, feels that silver jewelry fits personality and outfits best.

“I find that silver matches my aura more and goes well with what I wear,” she said.

Since silver jewelry is calm and sophisticated it is best not to pair it with loud patterns but rather soft patterns. This way your jewelry can stick out and not clash with the rest of your outfit.

Hayden Hedstrom, ’24, is a gold jewelry person because she believes it helps to flatter her features.

“I feel like gold helps accent both the choice of clothing I wear and my hair color,” she said.

Hayden, who is a brunette, looks best in gold because it offers the right amount of contrast to her hair. Gold also fits best with dark eye colors because it enhances them and adds a golden tone.

Although people tend to stick to one metal and rarely want to switch it up, it is important to recognize that jewelry is a way of self-expression. Some even wear both silver and gold depending on what outfit they are wearing and what pieces they like the most.

Senior Catie Spence likes both gold and silver metals, so she switches between the two types of jewelry on a weekly basis.

“I’ll usually wear gold jewelry for a week and then silver for a week,” she said. “I like both metals and don’t want to choose between them, so I just rotate.”

Catie pulls both silver and gold off by pairing certain color clothing with the metals.

“Usually I wear cooler colors when I’m wearing silver, I wear warmer colors when I am wearing gold,” Catie explained.

Many also use jewelry to symbolize a memory, person, place or religion that they can always have with them. It is a silent reminder of one’s story or beliefs that they can show off by accessorizing.

Naomi told the Willistonian that she has a necklace that she holds close to her heart because of the emotional connection she feels to the piece.

“My favorite piece of jewelry is my necklace because of its sentimental values and how much it means to me,” she said.

This necklace is silver with her birthstone, a heart and a sun pendant that her mom gave her.

Recently, celebrities have been shifting from metals like gold and silver to pearls. At the met Gala, stars like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Lizzo, and Gigi Hadid wore pearls in the form of long necklaces and stacked bracelets.  Chanel, the famous fashion empire, had their 2023-2024 fall/winter fashion show called “Ready-To-Wear” in Paris. Many models wore pearl dangly necklaces and earrings to radiate a gorgeous glow that gives their outfits some elegance.

Like Naomi, Hayden believes that jewelry is a way to reflect who you are as a person, which could suggest why so many celebrities are make jewelry part of their outfit when appearing in public.

“I think that the type of metal you wear shapes a person’s expression and style,” she told The Willistonian.
