How Terrific is “Terrific Tuesday”?

Terrific Tuesdays more than just a chance to get out of an extra half hour of study hally.
Since Wednesdays are half days and there are only three classes, dorms have been ending study hall at 9:30 on Tuesdays to participate in fun activities for about 30-45 minutes. While they provide an outlet from doing work, some kids find that they need the full two hours of study hall to get their work done, so they have mixed feelings about it, especially as the year goes on and work piles up.
Terrific Tuesdays began in 2021. Every Tuesday study hall ends earlier than usual and dorm residents come together to spend time together. In the past, there have been scooter races on the residential quad, s’mores, movie/tv show night, and board games. This has been a great way for dorms and the residential community to build camaraderie, especially in the beginning of the year.
Trying to come up with an activity every Tuesday can be tricky.
Pierceson Squires, a senior proctor in EMV, thinks it is hard to come up with ideas for everyone,”
“People always say they want to do terrific Tuesday but once it comes, people seem to prefer just having the time off,” Pierceson said. “I feel like people would like to do activities, it’s just hard to find something that will appease everyone.”
Erin Davey, a dorm parent in EMV who was on duty Tuesdays in T1, also understands it can be tricky to rally the dorm to participate in activities, but thinks it is beneficial.
“I don’t think it is hard to come up with ideas, but I think it is hard to find something everyone wants to do,” she said.
“9:30 at night can be difficult for some kids as the year goes on because people have a lot of work and kids just get tired,” Davey said. “This why I did love the show because people could relax while doing something together, but competitions [with other dorms] always get people outside in the fresh air and connecting with kids in different dorms.”
Junior proctor in Wold, Camille Armaganian, finds the balance with spending time with her dorm and schoolwork hard.
“Sometimes I feel stressed out when study hall ends early,” she said. “Although I very much enjoy being together as a dorm and doing activities together. I generally stay up later finishing some work and or studying.”
Sometimes the Terrific Tuesday activities fall on the shoulders of the proctors to plan and come up with ideas. This can be time consuming because it is hard to think of ideas for everyone and the school year along with workloads tend to become more difficult. However, in the end, these proctors are all on the same page when it comes to participation in Terrific Tuesdays.
Despite her busy schedule, Caroline Aufiero, a junior and proctor in Wold, loves being able to end study hall earlier to connect with her dorm.
“Especially after a long day of school and hard work during study hall, terrific Tuesdays are an awesome way to get together,” Caroline said. “Get out some more energy, de-stress and enjoy myself and time with friends and dorm parents. ”
Caroline also enjoys prepping for the famous lip-sync battle on Terrific Tuesdays.
“Recently we have been spending our terrific Tuesdays practicing for our lip-sync which I also enjoy,” she said.
Davey also agrees with practicing for the big battle is one of her favorites, as well as a more relaxed and optional approach to using that time.
“I would have to say the scooter races, and anything related to the lip sync rehearsal. I also truly enjoyed the time our dorm spent together watching our show.”
