Once again, New York City turned into a runway as designers, celebrities, and rising talents all come together for Fashion Week to set a tone and sense for the upcoming season.
New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is one of the 4 big global fashion weeks, with the other three being Paris, Milan, and London. A semi-annual event, Fashion Week containing a sequence of fashion shows in Manhattan, taking place each February and September.
The first NYFW was created in 1943 by Eleanor Lambert, with in person viewing often being populated by the rich and well-known celebrities of the time. Back then, with the second world war, American fashion editors could not travel to Paris, a turning point now considered the pinnacle of fashion.
For some students at Williston, especially students with a connection to the arts, NYFW is more than just an event to watch. This year they have especially shown that everyone can be a part of fashion. Sadie Dripps, a Williston senior, sees the inclusivity as a very important aspect of fashion.
“One of my favorite designers is Daniella Kallmeyer,” Sadie said. “She’s very inclusive—not just with race, but age, identity, but how the clothes fit differently on everyone. She makes the uniqueness the point.”
Sadie also mentioned that the arts at Williston are not as acknowledged as the sports programs, “Fashion is art that everyone participates in—we all wear clothes,” she said. “But it’s not celebrated the same way sports are. Even at Williston, we have alumni doing incredible things in fashion who don’t get recognized as much as athletic alumni.”
I saw NYFW as well this year, watching videos on designers and runways, I was surprised by how creative, refreshed, and inspired it felt: it wasn’t just because of celebrity appearances at runways or the most luxury brands, but instead the distinctive and unique designs and celebration of all aesthetics.
Designers like Collina Strada, Peter Do, Daniella Kallmeyer, and Elena Velez stuck out to me in particular. Each of them showed a different aspect of the fashion world, creating experimental shows and stunning looks.
