The revised Study Hall time is small, but it’s making some big differences.
Study Hall is now from 7:45-9:45; students have to be in their room studying the whole time with a 10-minute break from 8:45-8:55. Previously, Study Hall was from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Some students dislike this change in study hall because they lose time before during which they could socialize.
The Deans’ Office made this change in hope of bringing dorms more together to create better relationships around campus. Dean of Student David Koritkoski told The Willistonian it was “student request” that led to the changed study hall time.
Coach Blayne Lapan, Dorm Head of Ford Hall, feels that the change is a beneficial thing for students.
“I think its better for the students, because often times students go to bed too late,” he said. “With the earlier study hall the students have more time to recover because they get to bed earlier.”
Lapan understands students’ frustration, but he prioritizes the connections that are now being made as a result.
“I see the early [check in], have an impact on dorm visitation, but it gives extra time to hangout in the dorm and form a better relationship with yourself and peers,” he said.
As a Ford resident, I can attest to seeing my fellow boarders all get along much better than in past years.
PJ Gasasu, a Ford resident, believes the extra fifteen minutes he gained after study hall has helped him get closer with his roommate.
He states “After study hall we play [“NBA] 2K” a lot and I feel we have become better friends then we were before,” he said.
Senior Daryn Fox feels she is finding the change, even though it’s insignificant, to take some getting used to.
“My brain is wired for 8-10 study hall,” she said.
