A wildly popular YouTube celebrity is in trouble for a controversial video he uploaded to the site.

On Sunday, December 31, internet superstar Logan Paul uploaded a disturbing video onto YouTube, showing graphic images of Japan’s Aokigahara forest, a Japanese forest where many people take their own lives. Parents are outraged that YouTube allowed this video to stay up for so long.

More than six million viewers saw what appeared to be a man hanging from a branch in the forest, only to have the camera zoom in on the body’s face.

According to Wired, Paul did not turn off the camera after running into the body, he kept on filming.

“After hiking only a couple hundred yards into Aokigahara– Paul encountered a suicide victim’s body hanging from a tree,” Wired wrote. “Instead of turning the camera off, he continued filming, and later uploaded close-up shots of the corpse, with the person’s face blurred out.”

Known for his witty personality and funny videos, Logan Paul is popular among teenagers on all types of social media platforms. On YouTube, Paul, 22, has more than 15 million subscribers. He has 16.2 million followers on Instagram.

It has been known for a while that YouTube has inappropriate content, but now parents are concerned that disturbing videos can be found on its main page. As a result, many YouTube users are losing trust in the site.

“For years dark corners of YouTube were declared off limits by concerned parents,” said Brett Molina in his Jan. 3 USA Today article. “Now it’s mainstream YouTube that’s setting off alarm bells.”

A few Williston students reacted similarly to the many outraged parents after the video was released.

Brandon McGill ’18 said that Logan Paul could have acted a little sincere in the video if he were to choose to keep filming, but since he was not sincere, he is at fault.

“Personally I think that if he didn’t stop filming, he should not have been joking about the death of this man,” Brandon said. “[Paul] is a celebrity and a role model. I think that he is at fault for laughing and giggling with his friends at the dead body. It is insensitive to a lot of people.”

Ethan Agostoni ’20, similar to Brandon, claimed that this video was ridiculous and that he never should have uploaded it.

“Logan Paul should have never uploaded or even simply thought about uploading this video to YouTube,” Ethan stated.

“Why would he do such a thing?” Ethan asked. “For views? For likes? It is pretty messed up. Logan Paul should not have uploaded this onto a website that is open to people of all ages, especially children. The fact that children were able to see a dead person on film is really absurd.”

According to Polygon, after the incident, Paul was removed from the Google Preferred top-tier ad platform. The filming of his new movie, The Thinning: New World Order, was put on hold by YouTube Red. The film was supposed to be the sequel of the 2017 hit, The Thinning.
